Module Description

In the Mediterranean region, where growing needs for dependable food systems and economic recovery collide with rising temperatures, water scarcity, and energy insecurity, sustainable cooling is particularly important. In many Mediterranean nations, the agri-food industry continues to be a major source of employment and exports, but because of insufficient cooling infrastructure, post-harvest loss rates are significant. Up to 40% of fresh produce may be lost before it reaches markets, especially in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean nations.

Purpose of the Module

This module aims to equip technical professionals, policymakers, and agri-food stakeholders with a deep understanding of energy use and sustainable cooling strategies across the food chain, with a particular emphasis on the Mediterranean region.

Sorina Mortada brings over 15 years of experience in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and policy development. She specializes in clean energy technologies, thermal energy systems, and sustainable infrastructure, with a proven track record in designing and implementing national energy policies, action plans and laws. As a senior energy consultant, Dr. Mortada has managed projects in solar energy, sustainable cooling, and energy efficiency. She collaborated with international donors, government agencies, and private sector partners to integrate innovative energy solutions into policy frameworks. Her expertise includes market analysis and impact assessment, supporting informed decision-making in the energy sector. Dr. Mortada holds a Ph.D. in Energy from Mines ParisTech. Dr. Mortada is an Associate Professor at the Lebanese University and the coordinator of the Master of Research in Renewable Energies.
