Module Description

This module provides energy professionals, policymakers, and engineers with advanced strategies for designing, implementing, and optimizing smart grid systems suited to the Mediterranean region’s unique challenges.

The module examines how smart grid technologies—including advanced metering infrastructure, energy storage, demand response, distributed control systems, and digital communication networks—enable reliable and efficient integration of renewable energy. Particular attention is given to challenges such as intermittency, voltage instability, reverse power flow, limited grid flexibility, cybersecurity risks, and the lack of suitable grid codes.

Through regional case studies, software simulations, and practical examples, participants will learn how to design, evaluate, and improve smart grid solutions that support high levels of renewable

 learning Outcomes

By completing this module, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the role of smart grid technologies in enabling renewable energy integration.

2. Analyze the technical challenges caused by high penetration of solar and wind energy in distribution networks.

3. Evaluate the effectiveness of battery storage, smart inverters, demand response, and microgrids in improving grid stability.

4. Simulate renewable integration scenarios using professional power system software tools.

5. Assess the impacts of renewable energy on voltage profile, frequency stability, power quality, and grid congestion.

6. Propose technical and policy solutions suitable for Palestine and the Mediterranean region.

7. Identify cybersecurity risks related to digitalized renewable energy systems and recommend mitigation strategies.

8. Interpret regional case studies and compare successful and unsuccessful renewable integration projects.
