Module Description

This module explores energy efficiency innovations as a key driver for sustainable communities, with a focus on Mediterranean and resource-constrained contexts. Communities in the region face increasing energy demand, aging infrastructure, and economic pressures, making energy efficiency a critical complement to renewable energy deployment. The module emphasizes how building retrofitting, demand-side management, smart technologies, and community-level interventions can significantly reduce energy consumption while improving resilience, affordability, and environmental performance.

Recent research highlights the technical and socio-economic value of energy efficiency in Mediterranean regions. For example, Ascione et al. (2014, 2017) demonstrate how energy retrofitting of educational buildings using insulation, passive strategies, and advanced simulation can reduce energy use and improve thermal comfort. Studies in Palestine also show the practical benefits of energy efficiency in public institutions: Dmaidi et al. (2024) provide baseline data on energy consumption in West Bank schools, while Alsamamra & Shoqeir (2021) present a case study of solar PV implementation in Palestinian schools, illustrating cost reduction and sustainable energy adoption.

Through contextualized case studies, energy audits, and applied simulation exercises using RETScreen Expert, this module equips learners with the skills to assess energy consumption patterns, evaluate efficiency technologies, and propose locally adapted solutions. Special attention is given to policy frameworks, economic feasibility, and innovative strategies that translate global best practices into practical solutions for sustainable Mediterranean communities.

 learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

1.Analyze energy consumption patterns across key sectors in Mediterranean communities.

2.Develop innovative, climate-appropriate energy efficiency solutions for sustainable communities.

3.Evaluate the environmental and economic impacts of energy efficiency innovations.

4.Assess policy frameworks and incentives supporting community-level energy efficiency.

5.Identify best practices and challenges through Mediterranean case studies.

6.Explore emerging digital innovations to enhance future energy efficiency.
