Module Description

Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy technologies worldwide, but ensuring that wind turbines operate safely, reliably, and efficiently remains a significant engineering challenge. This module introduces the fundamentals of wind turbine control systems and presents CertiTurb, a research project focused on developing analysis and simulation tools for the certification and validation of wind turbine controllers. Learners will explore wind turbine operation, control objectives across different operating regions, high-fidelity simulations using OpenFAST, and a robustness analysis framework based on Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs). The module highlights how advanced control systems contribute to improved turbine performance, reduced mechanical loads, enhanced reliability, and more sustainable energy production.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the main components of a wind turbine and explain how wind energy is converted into electrical power.
  • Distinguish between different types of wind turbines and explain the concept of a wind farm.
  • Explain the growth potential of wind energy worldwide and discuss its relevance to renewable energy development in Lebanon.
  • Explain the role of control systems in wind turbine operation and describe the main operating regions and their associated control objectives.
  • Identify the key challenges involved in controlling wind turbines under uncertain and variable wind conditions.
  • Describe the role of computer-aided control system design (CACSD) and high-fidelity simulation tools such as OpenFAST in the development and evaluation of wind turbine controllers.
  • Recognize different wind turbine control approaches, including conventional PI controllers, advanced H_∞ controllers, and emerging machine learning-based methods.
  • Describe the basic principles of robust stability and performance analysis using Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs).
  • Explain how the IQC-based certification framework leverages convex optimization tools to provide computationally efficient stability and performance analyses.
  • Explain the importance of controller certification and worst-case analysis, and how rigorous analysis frameworks can provide guarantees that cover all admissible operating conditions rather than a limited set of simulations.
  • Discuss how advanced control strategies can improve wind turbine reliability, performance, lifespan, and sustainability.
  • Appreciate the role of control engineering in supporting the transition toward renewable and low-carbon energy systems.
