Energy Challenges in Practice: Joint Insights from Academia and Industry

On February 12, 2026, the Faculty of Engineering at the Lebanese University – Tripoli campus hosted SERMED symposium entitled “Energy Challenges in Practice: Joint Insights from Academia and Industry”. The initiative falls under the Erasmus+ program and aims to address the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions while promoting industrial innovation to reduce emissions and ensure cost-effective energy use.
The event brought together leading academics, industry experts, researchers and students to discuss pressing energy challenges and explore innovative pathways for sustainable development in Lebanon and across the Mediterranean region. The symposium was also supported by the Order of Engineers and Architects in Tripoli.

Insights

Opening & Welcome

The symposium opened with a welcome address by Professor Nazih Moubayeed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, who emphasized the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Session 1: Industry Perspectives on Energy Challenges

This session focused on Lebanon’s energy challenges and needs:

Mr. Wael Zmerly, Founder and Managing Director of ZMERLY & CO, presented the Lebanese vision for energy sustainability, outlining strategies to reduce electricity consumption through solar energy solutions and smart heating systems.

Mr. Rustom Yamak, Founder and CEO of Tech Store Group, discussed the major challenges currently facing the country’s energy sector, stressing the need of innovative solutions to meet growing demand.

Session 2: Academic Research Contributions

The second session showcased research from the Lebanese University:

Dr. Rabih Dib, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, presented his work on integrated modelling and optimization of advanced energy systems, focusing on enhancing performance, reliability, and sustainability.

Ms. Loubna Khaled, Researcher at the Faculty of Engineering, highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at developing sustainable agricultural energy systems, with a global approach to improved thermal and energy management.

The symposium concluded with a roundtable discussion and an interactive question-and-answer session mainly how to reduce the gap between industries needs in Lebanon and research focus , followed by closing remarks and a networking coffee break that encouraged dialogue and collaboration among participants.
